A pre-construction technology checklist for luxury homes

Most technology regret in a luxury home traces back to a handful of decisions that were easy and inexpensive to get right early, and costly to fix later. This is the short list we walk through with architects, builders, and owners before the walls close.

Structured wiring and pathways

Run more than you think you need. Home-run low-voltage cabling to a central rack, conduit to hard-to-reach locations, and spare pathways for the upgrades that always come.

Rack room: space, power, and cooling

Plan a closet or rack space with dedicated circuits, proper ventilation or active cooling, and room to work. A rack that overheats is a service call waiting to happen.

Lighting and shading interfaces

Decide early where keypads land, how scenes are organized, and how motorized shades are wired and powered. Lighting control is the system families touch most.

Network as infrastructure

Treat the network like plumbing. Plan wired access-point locations for seamless Wi-Fi, a resilient internet strategy with failover, and segmentation so cameras, controls, and family devices stay secure.

Security and access

Camera sightlines, gate and intercom locations, door hardware, and sensor placement are far easier to coordinate on the drawings than to retrofit.
